I was pretty horrified when I heard they were remaking it. The original movie is one of my favorite movies. It's a hold out from the 70s even though it was made in 1983. The leader of the resistance was a young woman. And the resistance was made up of everyday people. My favorite character was Robert Maxwell--someone's dad! And people actually evolve from the start of the show to the end. Elias--the thug brother of Dr Ben changes his ways to become a hero. Plus all the repeating scenes and quotes--it's a classic in my books!
As a kid, I thought the sequel "The Final Battle" was hot shit. Guns, ships, fights etc....I didn't grasp the complete and utter difference from the original mini series. Suddenly Julie, the leader of the resistance, is captured and mind raped by the villianous aliens leaving the two macho guys to duke it out for the role of leader. And all the 'everyday people' are sidelined (Elias and Caleb) or get a make over (Maggie--not really credited in the Original series-goes from a middle aged woman to a hot young thang!). There are no more people in wheelchairs wheeling around the rebel base. And the mirrors and simple tools they used to fight the aliens at the end of the OS are replaced by high tech alien guns that they seem to have in abundance. They also seem to get a hold of many an alien transport ship. So much so that they should have gotten frequent flier miles!!
And we won't talk about the star child.
One good thing about the Final Battle is when the issue of aborting Robin's baby comes up, they are adamant (with the exception of the priest) that it's her choice and that the argument against it is: "an old argument for an old time!" You won't hear that on TV anymore!!
The new series is a re-imaging of V for a post 9/11 world. The characters are all different but the idea is still the same: taking the earth's resources with a smiling mask of friendship. It's gotten good reviews. So I am going to check it out. Maybe you should too?
11/3/09 on ABC 8 Eastern.

One of our "fresh meat" on her first night broke in ankle! People--her foot was at a right angle!!! She thought her wheels were too grippy but I think she must have locked wheels with someone during the "push/pull" endurance drill. This poor girl has no family around here and lived as far away as my house! In fact, she is living in my hometown. So I offered to go to the hospital in order to drive her home later. Bad Ass also went and we hung out with Anne for the night while they took x-rays and righted her foot. Looks like her ankle bone broke and the leg bones shifted!! She is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Poor girl!!
But we are keeping tabs on her and trying to help where we can. Her sister flew out to be with her too.
In happier news, our league scrimmaged with the undefeated 2009 season Boston Derby Dame Nutcrackers last night! I could have scrimmaged but declined. I just helped manage. I think if we are offered a chance to scrimmage again--which is likely because the Nuts are playing the championship in just a few weeks against the Cosmonaughties and want to practice against a team--I will play. But then we will probably have more people playing as well since there will be more notice. I think that I should play once with one of my derby idols Ruby Khan before she retires!!

She was in town to promote "Whip It!"-her upcoming derby film and rollergirls from teh area were invited to attend!
After the Boston Derby Dames gave her a t-shirt, I shouted: "We're New Hampshire Roller Derby!!!" and she said: "Oh New Hampshire!" and shook my hand!! I didn't bring my camera for some stupid reason but you can see me in the video (on top of the picture) in front with Central MA Roller Derby and Fresh Meat Lisa from NHRD! Check it out:

We rubbed elbows--literally--with some really great people. Check out me and John Landis who I believe to be one of the funniest men on earth:
He had so many great stories! We also met John "Gomez Addams" Astin who may be one of the nicest men on earth, James Duval--one of (if not THE) hottest men on earth, and Miguel Nunez from "Return of the Living Dead"--one of the most wired men on earth! Check out more photos here at the end of the Famous People album:

I passed my Level 2 assessments last night and now I can scrimmage with my league! I went to Central MA Roller Derby's practice (a lot of new faces!) and skated in their drills and then Empress pulled me aside to test me on hitting, whips, and leaning. I had already done my 20 laps (3.23 minutes) previously. I got to scrimmage with CMRD after! I let both jammers go by over and over again and just blocked and hit. I need to work on my mental game. Tonight I play with my league! I'm nervous!!

Watched and cried over Torchwood.
Said goodbye to the sweetest cat Sioux Bee who fought against his kidney disease since March.
Went to my brother Brian's deployment ceremony.
Saw my brother off Monday morning. Texas for a few weeks then Iraq for a year.
Got my bunny Magnus neutered.
Felt sick but somehow roller derby practice made me feel better.
Worked Roller Consolation hosted by New Hampshire Roller Derby. Skaters from all over New England participated. (I'll give the link to the NHRD page since I don't have my pics yet and there is a great recruitment video on the page)
Cleaned the kitchen, but didn't get much else cleaning done.
Moved the sunflowers.
Ups and downs. When is my next vacation?

Oh yeah--because I don't stay in 'derby stance' when we jam! But forget about the bruise on my butt! Check these things out:
My League won their third game this season! That is three out of four games played so far! I didn't take any pictures of the action because I was in the middle of the rink assisting Shovey Bel Air with penalty tracking! But here is a picture of my skater sister Make Out Bandit and me:

Next up for New Hampshire Roller Derby is "Roller Consolation" where New England skaters not going to Roller Con can skate on one of six teams. There is even talk of a men's derby bout!
A week later we had a fundraiser and I won the prize for Best Flapper Contest!!! Pretty damn cool since I never win anything! I have a picture of me with my mounted gun prize, but my favorite picture of the night was take with N.Joy Payne:

Practices has been really great lately. We have been doing a lot of "David and Goliath" drills where we skate a jam with a limited number of people and one jammer and pivot. But the hits and falls are for real. I think we have learned a lot just by being out there and doing it! And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I keep bruising my butt.
Got to stay in derby stance.
Got to straddle the inside line.

I finally uploaded the very few pictures I took at the April 25th hometown bout with the Killah Bees! I love my new camera but hate the memory card(s)!

My league won! I was screaming so much I thought I would have a stroke! The two teams played really well and were right behind each other in points. But in the end, NH won 86 to 75! ANd that's not all! Skate Free or Die won against Montreal a few weeks back 51 to 13! That's two out of three bouts in the inaugural season! How 'bout that?!
Did I mention that I finally leveled up? I am now level 1. That means I can get hit (and hit) by other women! It also means I can take my derby name!
The next bout is against the Utica Clobbers June 13th!

It's so busy at work that I don't get to post as much. But NHRD had it's kick off party a week back. Jennyfear and her husband came and were super supporters! (thanks guys!) I think the turn out was pretty good! Some of the roller girls arm wrestled people for a dollar. I think Bad Ass said she won six of her matches! Go Bad Ass!
Katie and I are waiting to be reassessed. As far as my stance and crossovers go, I was told by Tank that my "form was fine" and I got a "good" and "perfect" from PutUNya! I hope we get reassessed soon. The new Fresh Meat are nice, but relearning toe stops a third time is killer on the soul. We also moved up to Manchester to practice. That is a loooong ride!
First home town bout is the 25th! I'm told I will be part of the slow mo demonstration of what is legal and illegal in derby! I hope that doesn't change! I'm also at the will call table.
Oh and we did the Walk for Change for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. I raised $250 and I think the league raised over $2000. We were the last to come in for the walk. It was kind of funny.

I did not pass.
Stability/core, stance, and my crossover prevented me. Empress said that she felt at this point that I wouldn't be able to take a hit. Strengthening my core/stability and perfecting my stance would help me take the impact of a hit. I understand and accept that. It was still really painful to hear. I tried not to cry, but when Bad Ass said she didn't pass the first time and cried, I let a few tears drop! Over the next few weeks the few of us "level zeroes" are going to work on our problem areas and will be reassessed.
That was just the start of a crappy week. Monday we brought Sioux into the vet because he wasn't eating right and had gotten skinny and found out that he has kidney problems. I'm not sure why-he is a young cat. He is doing pretty well on the meds and is eating again. And acting like himself. I just hope this is something that can be taken care of. Sioux-Bee-Sioux is probably the nicest cat you will ever meet!
Funny story in an unfunny situation: We put him into the carrier to take him to the vet. But when I picked it up, I thought it was too heavy for my skinny cat. When I looked in, I found that Razzle was a stowaway!!
edit: I forgot to mention that I dropped and broke my camera taking a picture of a stray cat. That's three things, right?

At practice Sunday we had to do those dreaded 'pyramids' where you do laps for each round. So first round you do one lap and come in. Fifth round you do five laps. This time we had to partner up and first push your partner around the track and then switch off and have her push! So we were really doing ten laps at the fifth round. (By the way, once you reach the fifth round, you go backwards: five then four then three etc...) But I was kicking out those crossovers and pushing Darlene and myself through the crowd! Sure we weren't first, but we did pretty damn well! Crossovers make the difference!
By the way the Boston Derby Dames season opener was great. SO PACKED!!!! We found seats behind PutUNya Grave and Bad Ass Mama! The Dames won by very much.

I was told last week that I could go for my level 1 assessments in a few weeks! I was really surprised and really excited! If I pass, I can do contact.
I'm finally feeling more confident. I actually will do crossovers (although I am still kind of cautious still) and am building up stamina. Finally! I think I do pretty well on the falling knee stops. But now I have to practice getting up on my toe stops. I get nervous of using them in case I snap my ankle. But I am trying!
Last night we braved the weather and went out to Roll On America in Lancaster. Check out the ad for the place--it reminds me of "The Fog", but instead of ghostly lepers, it's ghostly skaters! The Central MA girls are really nice. They have a fairly big group. Some zombie fans in there-that's always a plus! We are practicing with them again next week. :)
